According to ancient philosophers, Socrates’ and Mill’s, people desire one or two things. One, people desire to have an objectively good (healthy) state of body and mind (character). Or, two, people desire happiness, pleasure and freedom. Among these philosophical statements/beliefs, one may easily agree with either one. However, I do not. I believe that people desire most to be unconditionally loved and accepted.

To be unconditionally loved and accepted, it takes knowing a special person. People of the world, people today, people all throughout history can be used as examples of how NOT to unconditionally love and accept others. Naturally, people are unable to love unconditionally and accept others because people are selfish, self-centered, non-sacrificial beings. However, first, what is unconditional love? According to Wikipedia, unconditional love is,

a term that means to love someone regardless of his or her actions or beliefs. It is a concept comparable to true love, a term which is more frequently used to describe love between lovers. By contrast, unconditional love is frequently used to describe love between family members, comrades in arms and between others in highly committed relationships. It has also been used in a religious context to describe God’s love for humankind through the forgiveness of Christ.

Second, what does it mean to be accepted? To be accepted, one may believe that it is the mental attitude that something is believable and should be accepted as true. Basically, being accepted or approved for who a person is. You cannot have unconditional love without acceptance just as you cannot have acceptance without unconditional love.

Whether a person knows it, or even believes it, the only way to be unconditionally loved and accepted is through having a relationship with God. Within the scriptures, particularly Psalm 37:4, which states,

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

we find truth. The beauty of this verse is that when we delight in the Lord we find that He is the desire of our heart. He is the heart of our desires whether we believe it or not. He is truly the only one that can give us unconditional love and acceptance at our core. People then can mimic and follow and put into practice the same concepts thus extending human unconditional love and acceptance to each other.

How do we know this is true? The bible says,

Romans 2:14

Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it.

God leads us to discover his truth, not only through creation, but also through our conscience and existence. Some things are hardwired in us by God; we know they are always right or always wrong, no matter what anybody else says or believes. To be loved unconditionally and accepted is through God and God alone, perfectly and completely; and that is what people desire most.
